The present study examines and criticizes the scientific interpretations of the verses of the Quran by Muhammad Rateb Nabulsi in the book “Ayat Allah fi al-Afaq” in which the Quranic verses are compared with the findings of empirical sciences. The authors have evaluated three of Nabulsi’s interpretations using a descriptive-analytical method and with reference to library sources:
1. The application of “preserved roofs” (Al-Anbiya: 32) to the Earth’s atmosphere; Nabulsi relates this phrase to the layers of the Earth’s protective atmosphere; while syntactic, contextual and exegetical criticisms show that this interpretation is inconsistent with the appearance of the verse and its context and that the main meaning is the preservation of the sky from decay.
2. The interpretation of “Sukkarat Absaruna” (Al-Hijr: 14-15) based on the dispersion of light; This interpretation is inconsistent with the context of the verses, which emphasizes the denial of miracles by the disbelievers, and the verses are more likely to point to the stubbornness of the disbelievers contemporary with the Prophet (PBUH).
3. Applying “وَردَةً کَالدِّهان” (Ar-Rahman: 37) to the phenomenon of supernovae; This interpretation is inconsistent with the context of the verse, which is related to the resurrection, astronomical data, and conceptual metaphors of the verse, and etymological analysis shows that “وَردَةً” means flow and flow, not rose.
