The appearance of a number of Islamic teachings has created the idea of gender superiority. One of these cases is verse 228 of Surah Al-Baqarah, in which the phrase “And for men is a degree above them” has been the subject of doubt. This study seeks to analyze and respond to this doubt using a descriptive-analytical method and library resources. To achieve this goal, by examining the statements of Quran scholars of both sects, interpretive views on this verse have been divided into the following three general categories: absolute superiority of men; relative superiority of men in a number of rights such as rights related to the duration of marriage, the right to divorce and the right to enjoy, and also the ability of men to forgive women. In this article, some problems with each of these views are stated that challenge their generality. In the next step, the chosen approach is presented using the following components: the conceptualization of the two words "man" and "degree"; the explanation of the epistemological system of the Quran about gender justice in the two areas of creation and enjoyment of rights, as well as the lack of connection between the rights of the parties with their equality. The achievement of the article is that the concept of degree in this verse does not mean legal superiority, but rather the greater ability of men to perform their ontological duties, which naturally entails greater authority for them.
